SWING BAND – rehearsals & gigs for the rest of term
Please find all the dates and times of rehearsals & gigs between now and the end of the year here:
HELP!! Volunteers needed
Please, please, please … due to the current security situation, we urgently need 2 or 3 adults to man the door tomorrow night at the Marines Social (on a rota, so you can still enjoy the evening). There will also be a couple of sixth-formers helping. Those who can help need to be at The Coro by 6.45pm so that we can check everyone has a ticket.
If you are willing to help please email me at rbu@uvhs.uk . If you have a ticket already I will happily refund the cost of it – if you don’t have a ticket, you’re getting the opportunity to experience a great night’s entertainment (and get some food).
SATURDAY – could those who have very kindly volunteered to help run the raffle and sell programmmes please be at The Coro by 6.40pm. Doors open at 6.45 and, due to security, we will need ‘all hands on deck’.

Arrangements for this weekend
The following dates and times were given out at Wind Band rehearsal this evening:
Tuesday 23rd May Full Wind Band rehearsal until 5.15pm
Thursday 25th May Full Wind Band rehearsal with Ruth Wardle (Marines) until 4.45pm
Friday 26th May
‘Invited Players’ for the Royal Marines/UVHS massed band @ The Coro from 3.45pm – 5.15pm.
Saturday 27th May
12.30pm Careers presentation in the Supper Room @ The Coro – PLEASE TRY TO GET TO THIS WHETHER YOU ARE IN THE MASSED BAND OR NOT. A BIG TURN-OUT WOULD BE A NICE WAY OF SAYING THANK-YOU FOR THEM COMING TO US FOR THE WEEKEND.
1.30pm Massed Band rehearsal @ The Coro
4pm Corps of Drums rehearsal until 4.25pm
7pm ALL Wind Band members arrive @ The Coro in full Wind Band uniform (see me if you haven’t got a shirt). Cases go in the Ante-Room (off the foyer). Do NOT go to the dressing rooms.
7.30pm Concert Starts. At the end of our set there will be an interval followed by the Marines set – during this time you will be standing or sitting on the floor in the side aisles, BUT against the wall, as the drummers need to be able to march up and down without kicking you!!!
After the Marines set there will be a 5 minute break when all the ‘massed band’ players go back on stage – others stay in the aisles.

Royal Marines Careers Presentation
As part of their visit to us next weekend, there will be a Royal Marines Band Service Careers Presentation at The Coronation Hall on Saturday 27th May from 12.30-1.20pm. Please could I encourage as many of our music students (and parents) to come along as possible, especially if they are interested in a career in any of the armed services music organisations it is well worth it. Even if they are not currently interested, it may give them a nother idea for a potential career. All 3 services are now actively recruiting singers and guitarists alongside the more traditional wind, string and percussion instruments, and all 3 are upping their recruitment numbers over the next few years. From 1.30pm onwards, the Marines Band will be rehearsing in The Coro and any student/parent not part of that massed band is welcome to come and watch some of that rehearsal.
Swing Band on Radio Cumbria
On Sunday afternoon the Swing Band will have a feature on Radio Cumbria’s ‘Harry King Show’ (at some point between 2pm and 5pm).
Heart of Ulverston Awards
If you have any ideas for people and/or groups in the community who are deserving of a nomination for a Heart of Ulverston Award, please take a few minutes to complete the online form below. Last year, the number of nominations was disappointing and led the committee to question whether the awards should continue, but various members of the community felt that there was a lot to celebrate and that it would be a real shame to just let it go. Let’s show people/groups that we recognize and really appreciate the work they do in the community.

Thank you
Wind Band performance shirts etc.
Just a reminder that every member of the Wind Band MUST wear full uniform for every concert: black shoes (& socks), black trousers/skirt and a royal blue polo shirt with logos. These shirts are available to buy from Coniston Embroidery at this address (it is labeled ‘Rhine Valley 2017):
https://www.conistonshop.com/UVHS-Music-Department_169/school/index.php
However, band members do NOT have to wear the ‘Rhine Valley’ shirt – if they have a Salzburg, Holland or Lake Garda shirt that is absolutely fine.
For those going on tour we do ask that players also consider buying a ‘supporters shirt’ for the outward journey (and return if it isn’t smelling!!!). This is the shirt with our main sponsor logos on it as well as the student’s name or nickname on the back – this is NOT compulsory though.
