Having won the Barrow Schools 8 a side Cricket Competition, we now got the chance to test ourselves against other winners from around Cumbria in the County 8 a side President’s Trophy Finals at Furness CC on June 25.
Our first game was against Millom School and we got off to a tremendous start. With all teams only batting for 8 overs, starting on 200 runs and losing 5 runs for each wicket lost, the UVHS side managed 233 runs losing 4 wickets. Millom then could only score 223 runs losing 3 wickets. Our second game was against The Lakes School. UVHS could only manage 210 runs losing 4 wickets to The Lakes Schools 234 runs for the loss of 1 wicket. Our third game saw us play Ullswater School in a high scoring game. UVHS scored 235 runs losing 4 wickets, but Ullswater were simply too strong scoring 261 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. Our final game against Cockermouth School was a must win, but unfortunately we simply lost too many wickets to give the Cockermouth team a struggle, with the UVHS boys managing 221 runs losing 5 wickets in the process to Cockermouth’s 236 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. Over the day we managed 1 win and 3 losses, but had we managed to lose fewer wickets and take a few more, our totals would have been higher and our games would have definitely been very close, as we would have been able to put more pressure on our opposition.
Our Yr 7 team is developing nicely and hopefully next year we can build on a healthy start and have a good run in the County Knockout Competition.
Well done boys.
