On thursday June 12, UVHS Yr 7 Rugby league team travelled to Millom Rugby league Club to play St.Benedict’s School from Whitehaven in the Yr 7 County Rugby league Final. Travelling by bus with the Yr 10 team who also made their final, there was a mixture of apprehension and excitment amongst our young team. St.Benedicts had teams in the Yr 7, 8 & 10 finals, so we knew the game was going to be a hard one. UVHS started well scoring early on when Harry. R, moved through the St.Benedicts defense to score out wide and make the score 4-0. Jack. S was unable to covert. Then a few errors and some lazy defence allowed St.Benedicts to creep back into the game and score 2 converted trys and a thoroughly deserved 12 – 4 lead. On the stroke of halftime a good attacking move by UVHS saw Luke.Q score in the corner which took us in at halftime 4 points behind at 12-8. Belief and discipline was the halftime talk and the boys knew they had 20 minutes to turn the score line around. The second half started and it was a real nip and tuck affair with both teams making good ground into their opponents half. Ulverston then surged forward and Harry.R again crossed the whitewash to give him his second try for the match and UVHS the lead for the first time since early in the first half. Jack.S converted the try and we had a 14-12 lead. The UVHS parents got louder and their support was invaluable throughout the game. From the restart a passing error gave St.Benedicts the ball deep inside our half and although we defended brilliantly, a kick across field found a St.Benedicts player who evaded our defence to score a try out wide. Fortunately the try was not converted and with 5 minutes remaining St.Benedicts held a slim 2 point advantage 16-14. The UVHS boys knew it was now or never and some really strong defensive work forced errors from their opponents and with 2 minutes remaining UVHS found tthemselves with the ball deep inside the St.Benedicts half. Some strong runs from Rhys. B, Alfie. D, Jamie B & Jack.S, layed the platform and then UVHS threw the ball outwide to find Izaak.F who with blistering pace evaded their defence to score in the corner and give UVHS a two point lead at 18-16 with just under a minute left on the clock. Jack.S could not convert from outwide and we knew we just had to hold onto the ball to be crowned champions and that is exactly what we did to beat a very good St.Benedicts Yr 7 team 18 – 16. Harry. S was deservedly named man of the match. All the boys who have turned up to practice and play this year have been simply fantastic from our first game loss to Walney School to being crowned kings of Yr 7 Rugby league in Cumbria. They have trained hard, listened and enjoyed building a real team ethos. Can Mr.Pearson and myself also thank Jon Stephenson and Mr. Armstrong for giving their time to assist us with training the team. Also Sports leaders Eric Hill, Rowan Smedley and Will Coles for helping within training sessions too. Lastly, the support from parents has been fantastic throughout the year. We definitely had an extra player at most games and it certainly gave the kids that incentive when parents are there watching, so thank you to parents who have supported throughout the year and at the final.
