On Wednesday 5th June, an UVHS Yr 8 team played Furness Academy Yr 8’s at Ulverston Cricket Club over 16 overs per team. Another lovely sunny afternoon gave both teams the opportunity to play some cricket. UVHS won the toss and decided to bat. Matthew Pearson and Josh Ollett opened the innings and UVHS were soon in trouble with Josh being bowled in the second over for 0. UVHS captain Tom Unwin was next in and both Matthew and Tom worked hard to overcome some good bowling to keep the score moving along. Just as both boys were looking good to lift the scoring rate as the overs were running short, a mix up in the running led to Tom being Run out for 14. David Boardman was next in and with the overs coming to an end for Ulverston Victoria, David and Matthew did their best to hit out and give the UVHS team something to bowl too. After 16 overs UVHS finished on 63 for 2. With Matthew Pearson not out on 25 and David boardman not out 7.
The Furness Academy innings was a case of blink and you will have missed it, with their two opening batsman hitting the ball very hard indeed. The UVHS bowlers tried hard, but they could not stem the flow of runs despite trying 5 different bowlers across the 7 overs it took the Furness Academy pair to score the required runs. Furness Academy finishing on 64 for 0 off 7 overs.

After moving through the first 2 rounds, UVHS U/14 cricket team found ourselves up against a very good Millom team in the 3rd round (quarter final of the county competition) of the National Schools Knockout Cup. The heavens had opened on the days preceding this game but we got the go ahead from Ulverston CC to play which was great. This competition is supposed to be a 40 over per innings game, but due to time constraints and a bad weather forecast the game was reduced to 16 overs per team to allow both teams to play. UVHS batted first on a very soft wicket and found runs hard to come by. Openers Thomas Gregg and Ben Rhodes worked very hard but found scoring runs difficult. Ben tried to lift the scoring rate but missed a well delivered yorker and was bowled for 2. Luke Oxenham was next in and also found the going hard. Luke and Thomas both tried to work the ball for runs to keep the score ticking over, but Thomas tried to hit out and was caught for 13. Joe Wilkinson came in and added 4 to our total before caught in an effort to get some late runs and when Luke Oxenham was bowled off the last ball of our innings, UVHS had scored 45 runs for 4 wkts in 16 overs. Ewan Coskin the not out batsman on 6.
UVHS knew they had to get quick wickets to put Millom under some pressure, but 45 was not a big total and we always knew this was going to be difficult. Jonathan Hutton and Luke Oxenham opened our bowling grabbing a wicket in the second over. Charlie Butterworth was brought into the attack and immediately made an impression with 3 wickets in his first 2 overs and UVHS had some momentum. Thomas Gregg and Jake Carter both added to the wicket tally and UVHS had millom 6 wickets down, but unfortunately we did not score enough to stretch the Millom batting further and they passed our score off 14 overs at 46/6.
Twenty more runs would have made the game very interesting indeed and we can only learn from these narrow losses and try to improve the next time around. Well done boys.

After beating Millom School in the first round, UVHS were drawn against Dallam School in the second round of this National 20/20 Competition. Dallam batted first and after their alloted 20 overs had scored 111 for 8. Our bowling and fielding was good overall on the day, but a dropped catch and a few misfields gave them probably 25 more runs than Dallam should have got. Jack Cairns and Luke Oxenham bowled tidy spells with Jack having figures of 4 for 10 from 3 overs and Luke 2 for 8 off 4 overs. UVHS were after a good start and we got one. Captain Owen Dryden and Thomas Gregg opened the innings and they played some nice shots early on to get us off to a flyer. However, with the score on 29, Dryden skyed a shot and was caught for 20, but with Luke Oxenham joining Gregg, the score continued to tick over nicely and the game was evenly poised. Gregg was the next to fall, run out for 8 with the score on 58/2. Luke Oxenham was playing beautifully with Gregg but this run out stopped our scoring rate in its tracks. Across our middle overs we lost our way and the scoring rate dried up. Simon Newby was next to fall for 1, but UVHS were still in with a chance of winning, if we could manage a few good run scoring overs. Tom James joined Oxenham and the runs started to come again. With two overs left we required 16 runs and with 1 over 10 runs were needed. Unfortunately UVHS could only find 3 runs in that last over, leaving us 7 runs short of our target on 105/3. Luke finished on 35 not out and Tom 15 not out. The side played really good cricket throughout the game, but some basic fielding errors gave Dallam more than we should have chased and too many missed scoring opportunities throughout our batting innings left us unfortunately on the wrong side of the of the scoresheet at the end with 7 wickets still in the shed. The bonus is the majority of this side were Year 9 pupils, hence hopefully we can learn from this experience and have a real go next year. Well done boys on beating Millom and giving last years winners of this competition a real run for their money.
