U/15 ESCA 20/20 Cricket First Round

A glorious afternoon saw UVHS U/15’s cricket team take on Millom School in the first round of the English Schools 20/20 comp at Ulverston CC. Millom are always tough opposition when it comes to cricket, but this did not faze the UVHS lads who really performed well with both bat and ball to dominate the game. UVHS skipper Owen Dryden won the toss and elected to bat first.  Both Dryden and Thomas Gregg opened the batting, but with only 5 to his score and the score on 15, the UVHS captain was well caught bringing Ewan Coskin to the crease.  The score flowed nicely along before Coskin was stumped for 12 making it 41 for 2.  No.4 batsman Luke Oxenham strode to the wicket to join Thomas Gregg who was keeping the scoreboard ticking over nicely.  The pair took the score to 68 before Oxenham was bowled for17 with one ball to go of the innings.  This brought in Callum McElroy who managed a single from the final ball to give Ulverston a total of 69/3 from a revised 16 overs.  Thomas Gregg carried his bat through the innings and finished with 18 not out.

Milloms innings started slowly with Capt Dryden and Jack Cairns bowling very tightly to have Millom behind the run rate early and after 4 overs Millom were 6/0.  Luke Oxenham and Thomas Gregg were brought into the attack and the pair took wickets at regular intervals to have Millom really struggling on 18 for 3 from 8 overs.  The Millom batsman realised they needed to push on and managed to hit a few well timed shots for boundaries, but in their push for runs lost wickets aswell to leave UVHS on top of the game.  Oxenham’s 4 overs giving him figures of 12 for 2 and Gregg’s 4 overs tidy figures of 10 for 4.  Cairns and Dryden both came back onto bowl the final 4 overs of the Millom innings and they held their nerve.  The Millom innings finishing on 59/9 and a 10 run victory for UVHS.  Dryden having figures of 9/1 from 4 and Cairns 11/0 off 4 good overs.  The fielding was excellent throughout the 16 overs bowled at Millom with all the boys showing good determination and motivation.  A really good win over a very strong cricketing school.  Well done Lads.
