The last event before Easter took place on Gowbarrow. This open fell is on the north side of Ullswater, close to Aira Force. After leaving Ulverston in thick mist it was a surprise to travel over Kirkstone Pass and into the sunshine. Luckily this held for the day giving all the runners some stunning views over the lake. It almost made the hard climb worth it!
Gowbarrow use to be very runnable, but has become quite tussocky in recent years. The undulating top was a great area for contour recognition with numerous small hills, knolls, crags and marshes. On the technical courses the planner mixed long legs, where route choice was important, with short legs where quick decisions and feature recognition were necessary. The shorter courses used the few available paths and runners were given the opportunity to cut corners. Both the yellow and orange courses were trickier the usual and our runners did particularly well.
In the most technical courses (green, blue & brown) UVHS runners compete against adults. The competition is fierce and it is much harder to do well. Jack (12) again ran well, into 5th place on the brown, while Jack (11) and Malachy (10) are beginning to get use to the length of the blue course and improving every time. The younger runners produced some excellent results with winners on the yellow, orange, light green and short green courses. Andrew (7) continued with his successful run winning both the yellow and orange course. However, he was pushed all the way by James (7) who came 2nd on both courses. Hannah and Hannah (7) ran very well together on their first orange to finish 7th. On the light green course Tom (9) 1st, got the better of Will (9) 4th, with Angus (9) 6th and James (8) 7th. The best girls result came from Collette (10) who was delighted to win the short green, 1 min ahead of Adam(10). The next runner was well beaten, 7 mins further back.
