Quiz Time: How ‘replicant’ are you?
But the word ‘replicant’ can only really refer to one work, or rather to a pair of them. Philip K Dick’s ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?‘ (1968), and Ridley Scott’s film, ‘Bladerunner’ (1982).
Both deal with the ever more pressing question of what it is to be human.
Six replicants have escaped Mars and comeback to Earth – to meet their maker, and have their four-year lifespans extended. Their presence is outlawed on Earth, which means that Bounty Hunter Rick Deckard (played so memorably by Harrison Ford) has to hunt them down and ‘retire’ them (not kill them, because they’re not human). It’s kill or be killed, but somewhere along the way, Decker’s humanity is tested to the limit.
