Literary Anniversaries: 20 September
Taking an average reading speed of 300 words per minute, it would take nearly 100 hours to read the series of books that today’s birthday boy is most famous for (which stands at 1,770,000 words). Any ideas who it could be?
Yes, today in 1948 GRR Martin was born, author of the Game of Thrones titles.
George Raymond Richard Martin adopted the GRR initials as a tribute to his hero, Tolkien, and indeed he has been described as ‘the American Tolkien’.
Amazingly the first volume in the saga, A Game of Thrones, was published over twenty years ago, in 1996. Ask any fans about how the series has developed and you’ll receive an answer varying from politely frustrated to furious about Martin’s writing speed – the saga still isn’t finished!
