A book I Recommend: Mr Sims

By David Mitchell

I’m a huge fan of David Mitchell’s novel: he’s probably most famous for Cloud Atlas, which combined lots of different genres, from historical to sci-fi, and was turned into a film a couple of years ago. However, Black Swan Green is possibly my favourite book of his because it captures, through the story of 13-year-old Jason Taylor, the sometimes hilarious, often painful experience of growing up. In the course of the story Jason has to deal with a speech impediment, bullies, family tensions and even kissing girls. It’s a brilliant read, sometimes laugh-out-loud funny and at other times poignantly sad; it was so gripping that I read it in a day. It was definitely a day well spent!
