Having qualified during the Easter break by winning the Cumbria Golf Team Championships by 1 shot at Kendal Golf Club, our team of Luke. Q, Sam. B and Ethan. C had the privilege and fantastic opportunity to represent UVHS at England Golf Headquarters Woodhall Spa GC on July 11. Travelling across the day before gave our team a first sight of Woodhall Spa’s Bracken Course during the practice round. The dry conditions had made fairways very hard, but the greens were simply fantastic, but incredibly undulating and all 3 boys new this was going to be a real test of their golfing abilities. Unlike our County competition which was a medal based event, the national event was a points based stable-ford format with the best 2 scores from 3 to count, so keeping the ball in play and making par was going to be very important. Sunny but breezy conditions on the Wednesday met our team and whilst although they warmed up well, some nerves were evident. All three boys hit beautiful tee shots off the first tee which eased nerves, but unfortunately as their rounds unfolded, some excellent shots by all three pupils accompanied wayward shots and poor course management on some holes did not give the boys the scores or points totals they are capable of producing. Finishing 34th out of 35 with a 53 point total was a little deflating, but having the opportunity to compete at a National level should stand the boys in good stead should any of them play in competitions like this again. Final scores by our team were, Luke. Q (Handicap 3 – 28 points), Sam. B (Handicap 11 -25 points) and Ethan. C (Handicap 16 – 21 Points). Being one of 35 schools from across England who qualified for this National Team Golf Competition was a great achievement in itself.
