After beating Dowdales to win the Yr 11 Barrow Schools Rugby League final 28-10 back in December, the UVHS Yr 11 team had the chance to end their secondary school rugby league careers against West Lakes Academy the way they entered in Yr 7, by becoming County Champions again, only 5 years later. After finally finding a venue and a date to suit both schools, the game took place at Dalton RLFC on March 27.
A cold and wet afternoon/evening met both teams, yet this did not bother either team as they literally threw the kitchen sink at each other for the best part of 60 minutes, as the game flowed from one end to the other. The defensive efforts from both teams were huge and the large crowd who had turned up to watch were treated to a spectacle of school rugby league. The UVHS team grabbed an early lead and this was a lead that they would never relinquish. The boys worked for each other and although the final 10 minutes were tense as the West Lakes Academy team mounted a comeback with 2 late tries, the final score of 24-16 was a reward for pure hard work and effort from the entire 18 pupils who played that afternoon. UVHS Yr 11 County Rugby League Champions once again.
Can I thank the Yr 11 boys over the 5 years for continuing to play and enjoy their Rugby League. We still had 10 of the 18 playing from that early Yr 7 triumph and a number of our Yr 10 team playing too, which should give them huge confidence for next year.
Well done all.
