U15 County Cricket Finals Day Report

A damp and overcast conditions greeted our arrival at Netherfield CC on Thursday June 22.  A 10.30am Semi-Final against Ullswater Community College, Penrith stood in the way of some within this U15 team playing in their third county knockout age group final in four years having won their U12 and U13 county competitions back when they were in year 7 and 8.  Winning the toss, Captain Jamie B decided to bowl and we quickly had the upper hand with two excellent run outs by Alfie D and Freddie B putting Ullswater on the defensive.  Bowling and fielding excellently over the 20 overs, the UVHS team could smell another finals opportunity restricting Ullswater to 93 for 8.  The ground was wet and the ball became very slippery, so for our bowling and fielding to be so good using what could only be described as a red round soap was amazing.  A great team bowling effort from Luke Q, Luke A, Will G, Max W, Ted S & Samson S only giving away 3 wides in 120 balls did not allow the Ullswater batsman to kick on.  The UVHS boys started brightly with the bat and quickly took the game away from Ullswater.  Our game winning total of 95 for 4 was again another group effort with Max W 11, Luke A 21, Jamie B 23 and Luke Q 17no all scoring good team runs to earn a third final in four years.

A dominant Keswick School bossed Trinity School from Carlisle in the other Semi-Final and after a short break we won the toss again and chose to field first again.  Luke Q quickly ripping the stumps out to give UVHS some early joy.  Unfortunately from that moment on in the field it was all Keswick.  We simply could not replicate our fielding or bowling superiority of the morning and Keswick with good play and some luck set us a target of 131 runs to win finishing on 130 for 6.  Going out to bat we started brightly but soon were losing wickets constantly.  A partnership or two was what was needed as we were up with the run rate over the first 5 to 6 overs.  Unfortunately, some excellent cricket shots were followed by poor shot making and some good catching left the UVHS team with simply too much to do.  Ted S 14 and Samson S 13 were our top scorers.  Our last wicket fell with the score on 81.  Not the performance we wanted to finish on but a great effort by all who participated again this year to get to the game we set our sights on.

Again, can I praise our Year 10 pupils who have brought so much cricketing success to UVHS.  U12 County Champions in Year 7, U13 County Champions in Yr 8, Quarter finalist in Year 9 losing to eventual winners Millom and U15 Runners up in Year 10.  Thank you for sticking together and bringing so much cricket success (indoors and outdoors) to UVHS.
