Barrow Area Yr 8 Rugby Union Festival

Cumbria Rugby Union organised a Barrow Schools Yr 8 Rugby Union festival on Tuesday March 14 at Hawcoat Park Rugby Union Club.  Cumbria Rugby Union are spending a lot of time and effort in schools promoting Rugby Union and giving boys and girls the opportunity to develop their skills through practice sessions and development festivals.  The UVHS Yr 8 boys had already attended a festival at Ambleside this school year, so this Barrow festival was second chance for them to develop further their skills for Rugby.  Along with UVHS, Chetwynde School and Dowdales School also sent teams and we just played a round robin style tournament.  Our first 20 minute game was against Chetwynde.  We ran and passed the ball well and controlled the ball around the rucks which was good to see.  UVHS ran out winners 25 – 10.  Dowdales then played Chetwynde in a very one sided game, although most of the Chetwynde boys were playing their first games of Rugby, so all credit to them for getting out and giving it a go.  Our last game was against a very strong Dowdales School.  Dowdales are the premier Rugby League School in the Barrow area, so the boys knew they had to play well to get anything from this game, but being a different code we thought we stood a chance.  Unfortunately for anUVHS team that tried hard, we were just no match physically for Dowdales who ran out winners 40-0.  The boys enjoyed their second chance to play competitive games of Rugby Union and were asking when they could do it again, which was good to hear.   Thanks to Garry Holmes (Cumbria Rugby Development Officer) for arranging the festival.
