After being crowned County Cricket Champions across Years 7 and 8, the UVHS U14 (Year 9) team finally got the opportunity to play Sedbergh School’s Year 9 team in a 20/20 cricket game in May to put their skills to the test. Sedbergh are the premier cricketing school in Cumbria, so it is always good to test ourselves against a school who is always referred too as much better opposition. A lovely sunny afternoon and a very warm welcome from our hosts made for an enjoyable game. Batting first UVHS posted 81 runs all out from 17 overs. Losing our last 6 wickets for 3 runs was definitely not the plan and left us feeling a little dejected as we are a better batting side than we showed. Hasan. Z (27) and Jamie. B (22) both scored good twenties but some bad batting did not allow us to post a score worthy of the wicket, surroundings or our ability. The UVHS team started strongly when bowling with 2 early wickets to Luke Q and Will G to have our hosts reeling early on, but two dropped catches shortly after gave the Sedbergh opener (Wheatley) lifelines from which he would make us pay. Another wicket to Ted.S saw Sedbergh 3 down but our 81 runs was simply not a big enough total and Sedbergh passed our total for the loss of 3 wickets from 15.3 overs. This long awaited match was an enjoyable afternoon in beautiful surroundings but unfortunately our batting was simply not good enough on the afternoon. We tried hard in the field and had we had another 25-30 runs the result and game may have been much different.
Well done UVHS and thanks to Sedbergh School for hosting the match.
