U13 Boys Barrow Schools Chance to Shine Indoor Cricket Winners

On Monday February 2nd, a team of 9 boys from across Years 7 and 8 travelled down to Furness College to take part in the Barrow Schools U13 Chance to Shine Indoor (Inter) Cricket Competition.  Having won a warm-up indoor competition in early December, ambitions were to win this competition also and progress to the U13 County Indoor finals against the best schools from each area of Cumbria.  Again as is so often the case with cricket in this area, all secondary schools did not send a team to participate, so our competition came from Walney and Millom schools only.  Millom had brought 2 teams which shows their depth and desire to provide their cricketing pupils with opportunity, whilst Walney was also a very good team who we beat in the previous competition in December, so the boys knew they had to play our best to win.

Our first game was against Milloms 2nd team.  UVHS batted first scoring 86 for 1 off 7 overs with Luke.A, Luke.Q and Jamie B all retiring on 20 runs each.  Millom managed 34 for 7 with Freddie. B and Jamie.B both taking 2 wkts each.  Our 2nd round robin game was against Milloms 1st team and on paper a much tougher test.  UVHS batted first and posted 74 for 2 from our 7 overs with Jordon. M and Luke. Q both scoring 20 retired.  Millom could only manage 58 for 4 from their 7 overs with Luke. Q taking 2 wickets in this good win.  Our 3rd group game was against Walney.  UVHS batted first again scoring 62 for 2 from 7 overs and then in a tight finish Walney finished on 59 for 6.  Jack.S took 3 wickets in the last over with Walney needing only 10 runs to win which was a great effort by him and a brilliant win for the boys.

All 4 teams took part in the semi-final play-offs with 1st playing 4th and 2nd playing 3rd.  UVHS finished first after the round robin stages and had to tackle Millom 2nd team to reach the final.  UVHS batted first scoring 65 for 2 with Luke.Q scoring another good 20 retired.  UVHS then held Millom 2nd team to 45 for 6 from 7 overs to reach the final with the two Luke’s (Luke.A & Luke.Q) taking 2 wickets each.

The final was as the form book suggested with UVHS taking on Millom 1st team.  What should have been a very close game turned into a very one sided affair with the UVHS team really stepping up and proving who was the best team on the day.  UVHS batted first and posted 78 for 3 from 7 overs.  Jamie.B scoring a good 20 retired with others in the batting order providing good supporting scores.  Millom never really got going due to the UVHS teams tight bowling and fielding, with Millom scoring 37 for 7 from 7 overs with all 7 boys bowling excellently in the final.

The team now get the opportunity to participate in the U13 County Finals in June against winners of other areas from around Cumbria.

Well done Boys.
