On Friday 23rd January, a UVHS U13 girls team participated in the Lady Taverners Girls U13 Indoor Cricket Competition held at Furness College. Only 2 of our team had participated in last years team which were county runners up, so this format was completely new to the other 7 girls of which 4 were Yr 7. Unfortunately, due to a lack of participation by other Barrow Secondary Schools, only UVHS and Furness Academy had sent teams to participate on the day, but the lack of teams did not detract from the ability levels of both teams who played on the day. The first part of the day allowed the girls to warm-up via a cricket skills circuit set up by the competition organiser, which allowed the girls to practice their batting, bowling and fielding skills. As only two schools from our area had entered this county wide competition, it was decided the teams would play a 9 over 2 inning game, which would give the girls much more cricket and a greater opportunity to enjoy the day. UVHS won the toss which was a great start and Megan. S our captain decided to bowl first and with our team knowing that the winner would go onto represent the Barrow Schools area at the County finals was ready to play. Furness Academy were not to be underestimated though and their first innings brought them 68 runs for the loss of 4 wickets from the first 9 overs. It was then our turn to bat and bat we did, posting an impressive 102 runs for the loss of 3 wickets, giving the UVHS girls a first innings lead of 34 runs. Furness Academy knew they had to score runs in their second innings and they started positively, but some great bowling by Ellie.B and Sophie.G who took 5 wickets between them in 2 overs stopped Furness Academy in their stride and after 9 overs Furness Academy had scored 70 runs for 7 wickets giving them a 2 innings total of 138 and a lead of 36 runs. Our girls new they needed 37 runs to win to progress onto the County Final later in the term and Megan.S and Anna.K took no time in pushing us towards a great win. Our second innings score of 38/1 in 4 overs saw the UVHS side win this excellent display of indoor cricket to progress to the U13 County Inter Cricket finals at Penrith in March.
Well done to the whole team.
