On Tuesday 16th December 9 boys from across Yr7 and 8 represented UVHS at the U13 Boys Chance to Compete Indoor Cricket Competition held at Furness College. Eight members of the team came into this competition having been part of the reigning Year 7 County Champions side, so to say expectations were high would be an understatement. Our competition on the day came from Chetwynde, Walney and Millom Schools, with Millom having 2 teams on the day which is great as more cricket could be played by all.
Each game were 7 over affairs with 8 players per team (the wicketkeeper did not bowl), so the cricket was fast and frantic. Our first game against Millom B was a good warm-up and straight forward win for the UVHS team (Millom B 35 v UVHS 36 – 2). Our second game was more difficult against a Walney team with players of good ability, but again the UVHS team stepped up a gear and came out winners to keep a 100% record (UVHS 62-3 v Walney 43-2). The third game against Millom A was a very even contest with the game going down to the final delivery of the 14 over game. Needing 4 runs to win, Millom tried to hit the back wall, but a mishit shot gave an easy catch and 3 wins from as many games for the UVHS team (UVHS 53-5 v Millom A 49-5 ). Our final round game was against Chetwynde and lunch must have taken its toll on the team as they struggled to get out of third gear for this one. Luckily our boys were far to strong for the Chetwynde team giving us 4 out of 4 from the group stages and an automatic final place (UVHS 69/6 v Chetwynde 35-4).
The final saw us up against Walney school and a chance to get the first piece of cricket silverware for this school year. As Walney and ourselves had brought 9 players we decided to play all 9 boys in the final. Walney batted first and our boys bowled and fielded excellently keeping Walney to 45 runs for the loss of 5 wickets off their 8 overs. Batting second is always difficult but on this occasion our class shone through to knock off Walney’s total with 2 overs remaining (Walney 45-5 v UVHS 48-0). This was a brilliant first up competition win for our U13 boys indoor squad and we can now look forward to some further practice sessions in January before our next competition in early February.
