31 pupils took part in the Year 7 and 8 Cumbria Rugby Football Union tournament in Kendal.
Ulverston pupils have been attending weekly rugby training and to finish the season we entered three teams into the Cumbria Rugby Football Union Tournament. A variety of schools attended including: Netherhall, Stainburn and Settlebeck. The games were very exciting and highlighted some fantastic rugby skills and even three man scrums! We were victorious and finished with 1st, 3rd and 4th places out of the 8 teams who entered!
A very young UVHS U/14 team ventured down to play St.Bernards on St.Bernards school cricket pitch after Barrow CC became unavailable due to overnight rain. UVHS won the toss and chose to field on a wicket that resembled a football pitch and it played that way with batting and runs very difficult to come by for both teams. St.Bernards managed 79 runs for the loss of 5 wickets from their allotted 15 overs. UVHS had 4 Yr 7 pupils in their bowling attack and all did a fantastic job against older opponents. Luke Q 1-8 off 3, Jamie B 1-6 off 3, Luke A 1-13 off 3 and Ted S 2-9 off 3 all producing excellent spells. When it was our turn to bat, UVHS started in the worst possible fashion losing 2 very quick wickets and St.Bernards backs were up. However, Adam C and Luke Q came together for a good partnership and then Adam C and Luke A put on further runs, all the while helped by some wayward bowling by St.Bernards. 9 runs were needed from the final over and 3 from the final ball, but unfortunately only 1 run was scored from it and UVHS fell 2 runs short of what would have been an excellent win. Adam C played very well for 27 not out and was well assisted by Luke Q 11 and Luke A 10 not out. Considering this was a Yr 9 – U/14 Comp, UVHS fielded 5 year 7 and 3 Year 8 pupils in this game which hopefully will give them great confidence for future games in weeks or years to come. Well played boys.
UVHS U/12 cricket team played Walney in the 1st round of the ESCA Bunbury Cup winning with an over to spare. Played on a glorious afternoon at Ulverston CC, Walney batted first and posted a very respectable 73 runs for the loss of 4 wickets from an alloted 15 overs. Jamie.B 1-12 off 3, Luke Q 2-17 off 3 and Megan S 1-6 off 3 were our standout bowlers. UVHS then batted really well to knockoff the required runs with an over to spare scoring 77 runs for the loss of 5 wkts from 14 overs. Jamie B played lovely for 30 ret and Alfie D 13. UVHS U/12 now move on to play Millom in the 2nd round on tuesday June 3 at Ulverston CC.
Well done to our Under 15 Tennis team, who beat St Bees School 6 matches to 0! Excellent performance from all 4 girls. Good luck in your next game girls!
The year 11 boys came up against a strong Trinty side in the county cup final. It was a very close first half both teams playing some nice football, with some good tackles flying in. after 28 minutes Ulverston conceded from a corner, due to some sloppy marking. trailing 1-0 at halftime UVHS came out trying to turn the game around, maybe pushing a little to much leaving not enough players back, Trinity school caught them on the break and slotted another passed Calum Mc. the game was soon put the bed considing from another corner, from the carlise centre half scorring his second of the game. Ben C missed some key chance’s. It didn’t look like it was there day. The boys heads still held high playing for pride, winning a penalty cooly taken by Huw B.
Trinity school proved to powerful from the Ulverston boys, final score 3-1.
Captains Man of the match once again Josh C.
