How to support your child with their controlled assessments.

Suggestions for the writing assessment.

Encourage your child to:

  • Produce cue cards and resources such as gap fills to help them memorise their sentences.
  • Create post-it notes of key words which they find difficult.
  • Use colour coding for different paragraphs.
  • Rewrite their paragraphs and gradually take away the prompts.

Suggestions for the speaking assessment.

Encourage your child to:

  • Record themselves giving their answers.
  • Create cue cards or use
  • Read their answers aloud and prompt them with words that they are unsure of.
  • Repeat their answers while gradually decreasing support.

Learning languages at home.

There are many ways that you can improve your language learning, even at home. Here are just a few ideas to get your started: is used throughout Key Stage 3 and includes lots of games, activities and worksheets that are used in class. It is fun and interactive. If you would like to know the logon details please ask your MFL teacher. is used for Key Stage 3 and 4 students by some of our staff who regularly post vocabulary lists online. Quizlet is a great tool to help you learn new words and compete against your friends to be the best. You will need to create your own logon for this site and ask your teacher which classes you can join in order to test your language knowledge. contains exercises for many of the topics that we study from Key Stage 3 up to and including A Level such as: Time, Greetings, Subjects etc, as well as help with grammar. Exercises include: match ups, fill in the gaps, reading comprehensions and so on. is a fantastic way to learn a new language through self study. You can set yourself your own goals and targets.
